Two more Frederick County Public Schools teachers have earned the designation of National Board Certified Teacher. Gainesboro Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Bridget Bailey and Michael Wolfe, a physical education teacher at Orchard View and Indian Hollow elementary schools, were recently notified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) that they have earned National Board Certification. Just over 3,900 teachers from across the country, including 136 in Virginia, earned National Board Certification in 2018. There are more than 122,000 teachers nationwide, including 19 employed by Frederick County Public Schools, who have earned National Board Certification.

National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program that requires teachers to demonstrate standards-based evidence of the positive effect they have on student learning. Candidates are required to complete assessments comprised of four components including: (1) content knowledge, (2) differentiation in instruction, (3) teaching practice and learning environment, and (4) effective and reflective practitioner. The content knowledge component is a computer-based assessment taken at a testing center. The other three components are portfolio-based. While state licensing systems set basic requirements to teach in each state, National Board Certified teachers have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices.

Frederick County Public Schools Superintendent David Sovine says, “Students who attend Frederick County Public Schools benefit from outstanding teachers who are committed to student learning, know their subject areas, provide meaningful feedback, reflect strategically on their teaching practice and have made a personal commitment to ongoing professional learning. Mrs. Bailey and Mr. Wolfe exemplify the high-quality teachers who serve our students each day and they are to be commended for pursuing National Board Certification and achieving that distinction.”
