Millbrook High School Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Track and Field Coach Kevin Shirk has resigned after accepting a teaching position in Loudoun County for the 2020-21 school year. Shirk has served as a math teacher at James Wood Middle School for the past 15 years. He’s been the head coach of Millbrook’s cross country team since 2010 and led the school’s indoor track and track and field programs since 2012.

Millbrook High School Coordinator of Student Activities Scott Mankins says, “It is with much regret that we announce the resignation of Kevin Shirk as one of our coaches at Millbrook. I consider Coach Shirk one of the top coaches in the state, a great person and a good friend. His athletes and teams would show progress throughout the season, always seemed to peak at the right time, and represented the school and community in a very positive way. I wish him and his family the absolute best as he begins a new chapter in his teaching career.”

Although the search for Millbrook’s next cross country coach is ongoing, Joe Hall has been promoted from assistant coach to head coach of Millbrook’s indoor track team and track and field teams. Hall, who is a special education teacher at James Wood Middle School, served as an assistant coach for Millbrook’s indoor track and track and field teams this past season. He previously served as the head track and field coach at Warren County High School, an assistant track and field coach at Handley High School and the head cross country and track and field coach at Lewisville High School in Chester, South Carolina.

Mankins says, “We are very happy to announce the promotion of Coach Joe Hall from assistant coach to head coach of our indoor track and track and field programs. He brings a great deal of experience as both an athlete and a coach and is excited about helping our teams continue a strong tradition of success and taking the next steps forward. We are excited to have Coach Hall representing Millbrook and our community.”

Shirk enjoyed a very successful coaching tenure at Millbrook. During his 10 years as the school’s cross country coach, Shirk’s teams claimed six district/conference championships, two regional championships and eight appearances in the state cross country championships. In addition, Shirk coached six individual district/conference champions, three individual regional champions and 12 student-athletes who earned all-state recognition.

As the leader of Millbrook’s track and field program, Shirk’s teams claimed two district championships. He also coached four individual state champions who claimed a total of nine state titles between them.
